because science fiction is a type of fantasy. and also most stories which are sci-fi have fantasy aspects, not all, but quite a few, like doctor who and such.

because they are both the same.

They are both unrealistic and require people to use their imagination.
Then you can always say, why aren’t action movies in this category also because they are also very unrealistic.

    Good question!

  4. Twink-2010 Says:

its probably becus they r one in the same..lol..since sci fi is mostly theory or kinda supernatural they make it synonymous to fanstasy..

  5. Ben S Says:

Science fiction and fantasy are grouped together, because both are not currently plausible. All other genres in fiction can possibly happen at any moment. Although science fiction can happen, it is not likely to happen currently.

  6. Fittings Doc Says:

Science Fiction and Fantasy can be widely different and non-overlapping, however they also are often intertwined and inseperable.

Both share taking a belief in something beyond the generally acceptable as the basis for the story, which is I guess why they get grouped together.

Personally I find the grouping of Horror/Vampire stories in with Fantasy much more questionable, but it has the same basis as grouping Sci-Fi with Fantasy.

    Well, they’re both speculative fiction.

Also, it used to be that both genres were relatively small enough so that book store owners didn’t want to bother to separate them out from one another.
