Is Dragonriders of Pern science fiction or fantasy?

science fiction

Question by Rand Al’Thor: Is Dragonriders of Pern science fiction or fantasy?
I’m a bit interested in Dragonriders of Pern when I saw it in the bookshops. But when I search wikipedia, it said that it is science fiction which I definitely hate. However, there are dragons stuff inside ,so if you guys know anything please tell me.
I don’t actually hate science fiction, I’m just a bit tired of planets, spaceships, attacking, bombing & stuff. I really dislike Star Wars because those lightsaber fights drive me crazy & gives me serious headaches.

I would call the Anne McCaffrey ‘dragons’ stuff Fantasy. The SF elements are implicit in the story but they’re never something that gets waved under your nose at every turn.

Science fiction and fantasy frequently get lumped together so that may be why wikipedia called it sci-fi. I think it’s definitely closer to fantasy. But the back story does involve people traveling to this planet in spaceships so there is a small sci-fi element as well.
But why do you hate sci-fi? Some of it is very good. You should give it a try.

It’s a bit of both, really. I jumped in with “Master Harper of Pern”, and I was hooked. The SF part isn’t really all that hard to get through, and it REALLY helps with the story. Most of them, though, don’t have it, just the early ones and some of the later ones, if I remember correctly. I haven’t read them in years, unfortunately, and your question has actually reminded me of how much I loved them. I’m heading to the library tomorrow to check out as many as I can.

Thanks for asking, and I hope I helped.

I consider it fantasy; the main difference between the science fiction and fantasy genres is the presence of technology. Most fantasy books either take place before or ignore the Industrial Revolution. Another way to recognize the difference is how the author explains how things happen that don’t take place in the real world (for example, teleportation): fantasy writers usually use magic while science fiction writers use technology.

It’s both. It also has elements of romance, action, adventure… I don’t think I can name a single book published ever which is ONLY one genre.

If you are determined to hate science fiction, don’t read it, because there’s definitely science fiction in there. Your loss. Have you even ever read any? Your comment about lightsaber fights sounds like you are talking about movies, not books.

I have read all of the series, it is fantasy and great fun.
It is set on a different planet called Pern, but that is the only scifi about it. It is more of a fantasy adventure novel series.
I dont like the scifi you describe either, so this should be right up your street.
